Item type:Articles, Lake phytoplankton status and trends: a case study from Greek lakes, Eastern Mediterranean(2025); ; ;Moschandreou, Kimon ;Navrozidou, ValentiniUntil now, little information was available regarding phytoplankton communities of Greek lakes. In this study, we present the first comprehensive analysis of phytoplankton composition and biovolume, as well as their inter-annual variations, across 15 natural lakes in Greece from 2016 to 2021. The ecological status and trends of these lakes were assessed using HeLPhy, a phytoplankton index of the Water Framework Directive (WFD). Additionally, this study examined potential similarities among lakes based on the number of phytoplankton taxa identified, the composition of phytoplankton communities, and the ecological classification. A total of 462 phytoplankton taxa from 10 taxonomic groups were recorded in 287 phytoplankton samples collected between 2016 and 2021. The phytoplankton communities in all lakes were dominated mainly by Cyanobacteria, Bacillariophyta, and Chlorophyta. The highest number of phytoplankton taxa was recorded in Chlorophyta and Cyanobacteria taxonomic groups. Based on the HeLPhy index, the lakes were classified into four ecological status classes: high, good, moderate, and poor. Inter-annual variations in ecological classification were observed. Eight of the 15 lakes were classified as having good or better ecological status according to WFD criteria, with deep lakes generally exhibiting a better status than shallow lakes. Bacillariophyta were more prevalent in lakes with high and good ecological status, while Cyanobacteria were more abundant in poor status lakes and dominated in bad status lake-years. Lakes in moderate and poor status exhibited higher total phytoplankton and Cyanobacteria biovolume values. This research improves our understanding of the status and temporal variations of phytoplankton communities in Greek lakes. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Conferences, Cyanobacteria community status of two natural lakes (Pamvotida, Zazari) in Greece(2025); ; ;Zacharioudaki, Anna ;Aligizaki, KaterinaMoschandreou, KimonCyanobacteria are among the most abundant microalgae taxa in freshwater lakes and play crucial role in their ecological dynamics. Cyanobacteria populations can proliferate significantly at elevated nutrient levels potentially leading to harmful blooms. Cyanobacterial biovolume (BV) can be used as a quantitative bioindicator in ecological studies and in monitoring potentially toxic cyanobacterial blooms. This study investigates the cyanobacterial community structure in two natural lakes. It presents a) the composition of cyanobacterial taxa, b) the temporal variations of cyanobacterial BV and c) a comparison between the lakes. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
- Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
- Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Conferences, Phytoplankton and Ecological status of natural lakes in Greece(2023); ;Navrozidou, V. ;Moschandreou, K.; The Water Framework Directive (WFD) requires the assessment of the ecological status of water bodies through monitoring biological, chemical and hydro-morphological elements and also their restoration on the watershed scale. For phytoplankton, Greece applies the Hellenic Phytoplankton Assessment System for Natural Lakes (HeLPhy) to classify the ecological status of natural deep warm monomictic and shallow polymictic lakes as HeLPhy responds to eutrophication pressure (Tsiaoussi et al., 2017). Phytoplankton has traditionally been one of the dominant elements in lake assessment and thus has played an important role in the development of WFD-compliant assessment systems (Poikane et al., 2015) such as HeLPhy. Aims of the study: to present the inter-annual variations of phytoplankton composition (by means of biovolume) and of the HeLPhy values in 14 natural lakes from 2016 to 2021 and to investigate similarities among the lakes’ ecological status based on phytoplankton taxonomic groups. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Phytoplankton taxonomic groups in relation to physicochemical parameters. A case study from Greek lakes(2023) ;Navrozidou V.; ; ; The composition, abundance and biomass of phytoplankton are long considered as indicative of the eutrophication pressure in lakes. In addition, cyanobacteria-formed algal blooms are mostly linked to poor water quality. The objectives of the present study were a) to explore phytoplankton groups and physicochemical parameters of lakes in a Mediterranean setting and b) to investigate the response of phytoplankton taxonomic groups to phosphorus loading in those lakes. We analyzed data from the National Monitoring Network from 2019-2021 for 16 freshwater lakes in Greece. Water transparency, ionic composition and Total Phosphorus (TP) were correlated with major phytoplankton groups (chlorophytes, dinoflagellates, cryptophytes, bacillariophyceae and cyanobacteria). Based on both phytoplankton and physicochemical parameters, two groups of lakes were formed in cluster analysis, corresponding a) to deep warm monomictic and b) shallow and very shallow polymictic lakes. With regard to the impact from phosphorus loading, in both groups of lakes, a considerable increase of cyanobacteria biomass along a TP gradient was observed. Chlorophytes showed a statistically significant response in relation to TP in shallow and very shallow lakes. The results highlight the importance of phytoplankton in monitoring and evaluation of the status of aquatic ecosystems as phytoplankton biomass and community structure respond to changes in environmental parameters. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
Item type:Publication, Proposing biologically-based nutrient thresholds for Greek Lakes(2023); ;Karadimou, E.; ;Navrozidou, V.According to WFD, the composition and abundance of biological communities guide the assessment of lake ecological status; physicochemical parameters, such as nutrients, are supportive elements in this process. In this context, the thresholds of Good-Moderate (GM) status for Total Phosphorus concentrations (TP) in two high alkalinity lake types in Greece have been proposed using a European toolkit. Our objective was to investigate the conformity of GM thresholds for TP with changes in biological communities of two types of lake ecosystems, shallow polymictic and warm monomictic, in Greece. We examined pressure response relationships using data collated from the National Monitoring Network. We plotted parameters of phytoplankton, aquatic macrophytes and water transparency across TP concentrations in the two types of natural lakes. In TP threshold values of 20-40 μg/l changes in biological communities and water transparency were observed in both lake types. These nutrient thresholds seem comparable with the ones proposed with the application of a standard toolkit. Changes in the composition and abundance of biological communities, as well as in water transparency, appear to be explained by TP concentrations in two types of natural lakes in Greece. Efforts should focus in minimizing phosphorus loading in lake waters. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings
