    Application of a 2D-Hydrodynamic Model to Assess the Impact of Spring Water Discharge into the Lake Pamvotida in Ioannina, Greece
    (2025)
    ;
    According to the study conducted by the Greek Biotope Wetland Centre for the assessment of the minimum water level requirements of Lake Pamvotida, its water level (WL) should be maintained within the specified range of 469.10 - 468.20 m, a.m.s.l. However, the lake is very susceptible to larger reductions in its WL in late summer (below the proposed water level of 468.20 m) due to increased evaporation and over-pumping for irrigation purposes. This study investigates the introduction of freshwater from the Sentenikos and Kalithea Springs into Lake Pamvotida in order to mitigate the decrease in its water level (WL), during the dry season. A 2-D hydrodynamic modelling system was used to evaluate the effects of three scenarios in which the existence and location of the spring discharge inflow are differentiated. WL, temperature (T), dissolved oxygen (DO) and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) were used for the evaluation of the effect of the scenarios on the lake’s condition. The research showed a significant change on the WL fluctuation of the lake, and only minor effects locally dispersed regarding on its temperature, DO and BOD.

    Monitoring the Impact of Floods on Water Quality Using Optical Remote Sensing Imagery: The Case of Lake Karla (Greece)

    This study investigates the performance of published bio-optical remote sensing indices/ algorithms for monitoring water quality changes in Lake Karla, Greece, caused by Storm Daniel after the September 2023 flooding event. Commonly applied indices were utilised to estimate chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) and total suspended solids (TSS) using Sentinel-2 high-resolution optical imagery. In situ measurements were undertaken and water samples were collected during the pre-flooding period, post-flooding, and one-year post-flood, providing a basis for validating the remote sensing models. Monitoring results showed that most physicochemical parameters changed considerably. Chl-a and TSS were estimated by testing five and seven indices, respectively. Regarding the Chl-a estimation, the NDCI and 2-BDA indices outperformed other models, having high correlations with in situ Chl-a measurements and effectively following the in situ Chl-a temporal trends. Among the TSS indices, NDWI and TUR-IND demonstrated better performances, effectively capturing the variations in suspended solids. Overall, this study highlights the potential of Sentinel-2 imagery in assessing water quality changes, particularly in response to flooding events. It is an exploratory approach to assess the feasibility of utilising optical satellite data for evaluating the environmental impacts of natural disasters on lake water quality and supports decision-making in environmental management. Additionally, it identifies potential challenges and considerations that must be addressed to ensure effective application.

    Application of a 2D-Hydrodynamic Model to Assess the Impact of Spring Water Discharge into the Lake Pamvotida in Ioannina, Greece (Poster Presentation)
    (2025)

    The Greek Biotope Wetland Centre conducted a study to assess the minimum water level (WL) requirements of Lake Pamvotida, which should be maintained within the range of 469.10-468.20m, a.m.s.l. However, the lake is susceptible to larger reductions in its water level in late summer due to increase devaporation and over-pumping for irrigation. The study investigated the introduction of freshwater from Sentenikos and Kalithea Springs into Lake Pamvotida to mitigate the decrease in its water level during the dry season. The results revealed a notable alteration in the lake’s water level fluctuations, accompanied by measurable impacts on Temperature and Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD).

    Εφαρμογή και Αξιολόγηση Μεθόδων Δορυφορικής Βαθυμετρίας (Satellite-derived Bathymetry) στη Λίμνη Τριχωνίδα με Δεδομένα Sentinel-2

    Η γνώση της βαθυμετρίας μιας λίμνης, αποτελεί βασικό εργαλείο για την κατανόηση, διαχείριση και προστασία των λιμναίων οικοσυστημάτων. Η πιο αξιόπιστη μέθοδος βαθυμετρίας είναι με την χρήση ηχοβολιστικών συστημάτων (sonars) (Viaña-Borja et al., 2023). Το μειονέκτημα της μεθόδου είναι η δυσκολία εφαρμογής σε μεγάλη κλίμακα, καθώς απαιτείται χρόνος και εξειδικευμένο προσωπικό. Μια ακόμα εναλλακτική εφαρμογή για την μέτρηση βάθους είναι η δορυφορική βαθυμετρία (SDB), η οποία προσφέρει σημαντικά πλεονεκτήματα, καθώς επιτρέπει τη χαμηλού κόστους, γρήγορη, επαναλαμβανόμενη αποτύπωση μεγάλων περιοχών, ακόμα και σε μη προσβάσιμες περιοχές (Xie et al., 2023). Ο συνδυασμός δορυφορικών και επιτόπιων δεδομένων μεγιστοποιεί την αποτελεσματικότητά καθώς τα δορυφορικά παρέχουν εύρος και συχνότητα, ενώ τα δεδομένα πεδίου προσφέρουν ακρίβεια και επικύρωση. Σκοπός της παρούσας εργασίας είναι η ανάπτυξη και η αξιολόγηση τριών διαφορετικών μοντέλων δορυφορικής βαθυμετρίας, βασισμένων σε δεδομένα Sentinel-2. Συγκεκριμένα, εφαρμόζονται οι μέθοδοι των Stumpf, Lyzenga και Log-Linear Ratio Model (LRM) για την εκτίμηση του βάθους της υδάτινης στήλης. Τα αποτελέσματα των μοντέλων συγκρίνονται με Ψηφιακό Μοντέλο Εδάφους, το οποίο προέκυψε από μετρήσεις πεδίου με τη χρήση ηχοβολιστικού συστήματος. Η παρούσα εργασία στοχεύει στην ανάδειξη των δυνατοτήτων των δορυφορικών δεδομένων ως εργαλείο για την βαθυμετρική αποτύπωση των ρηχών υδάτων.
